Today on ImmigrationReform.com: DHS Asleep at the Switch, and Biden Advisor Doubts STEM Shortage
"Jared Bernstein, a Senior Fellow at the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities and the former Chief Economic Adviser to Vice President Joe Biden, told an audience at the Brookings Institution that there is no proof of a shortage of workers with high tech skills," notes Eric Ruark in his post today at Immigrationreform.com
"A just released scathing report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) documents a systematic failure of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to investigate sham educational businesses that arrange student visas," says Jack Martin in his writeup of the report today.
"Opponents of Arizona's hardline immigration enforcement law launched a new effort Tuesday aimed at thwarting a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that will allow police to enforce the so-called "show me your papers" provision.
A coalition of civil rights groups, religious leaders and business organizations filed a new request seeking a court order that would prevent authorities from enforcing a rule that requires police to check the immigration status of people they stop for other reasons," Fox News reports.
"The government says apprehensions of people for federal immigration violations have dropped to the lowest level in 40 years, reflecting a decline in the northbound traffic of illegal immigrants from Mexico. At the same time, the number of suspects booked by the U.S. Marshals Service for criminal immigration offenses has gone up dramatically, a function of tougher law enforcement on the U.S. side of the border. In a report released Wednesday, the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics said the number of immigration-related apprehensions has steadily declined, peaking at 1.8 million in 2000 but dropping to 516,992 in 2010--the lowest level since 1972," the San Jose Mercury News writes.
"Mitt Romney is out with another Spanish-language television ad starring his son, Craig--this one touting the candidate's commitment to immigration reform. Speaking in Spanish, Craig Romney tells viewers he'd 'like to tell you how my father, Mitt Romney thinks,'" says ABC News.
"'He values very much that we are a nation of immigrants,' Craig Romney says, as images of the Romney family flash on the screen alongside footage of Hispanic families. 'My grandfather George was born in Mexico. For our family, the greatness of the United States is how we respect and help each other, regardless of where we come from.'"
Many H-1B Employees Beyond Silicon Valley, Report Finds
"There's a common thread linking Cerner Corp., the University of Kansas Medical Center, Sprint Nextel Corp., and Black & Veatch Corp. They're rated in a Brookings Institution report, released today, as top users of H-1B immigrant worker visas in the Kansas City area. Those locally based employers are listed along with UST Global Inc., which has about 10,000 employees globally and supplies information technology talent to several Kansas City area companies," Kansascity.com says.
