Dan Stein Op-Ed: It's Not About Racial Profiling; It's About Upholding The Law
"Arizonans have endured decades of federal neglect of immigration enforcement. Half of illegal border crossings now occur in Arizona, and our study found that state taxpayers spend more than $2 billion a year on education and healthcare for illegal immigrants and their children. The porous border is virtually a welcome mat for criminal organizations that run drugs and other contraband through the state. Kidnappings in Phoenix are at an all-time high, and the killing last month of rancher Robert Krentz -- police suspect by an illegal immigrant -- is only the latest graphic example of the impact that rampant illegal immigration has on ordinary Arizonans," says FAIR president Dan Stein in a LA Times op-ed today.
"Where did Arizona's new immigration enforcement statute Senate Bill 1070 come from, and where is this fast-developing trend of state activism in immigration law enforcement headed now? The law has gone viral in the public mind over the past couple of weeks. Elites and special interests are in an uproar, but some polls show that ordinary citizens and voters support local and state enforcement initiatives by wide margins," says IRLI counsel Mike Hethmon in a CNN commentary.
Opponents of Arizona Law Try to Gin Up Boycott Support
Major illegal alien support groups like La Raza say they haven't decided to support a boycott of Arizona after the passage of SB 1070. "Responding to calls for a boycott, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer told a call-in radio show in Tempe this week that she can't understand why boycott supporters would 'want to hurt the legal citizens.' The pullout of conventions will hit Arizona's bottom line hard, but it will also affect workers in the tourism industry," the Washington Post says.
DC City Council Ready to Vote to Protect Illegal Alien Criminals
"Some D.C. Council members are looking to prevent police from joining a federal fingerprinting program that allows authorities to check the immigration status of people they arrest, officials said Tuesday," according to WJLA. Police Chief Cathy Lanier supports DC police joining the Secure Communities program, that sends fingerprints of inmates on to the DHS for screening.
Ohio Citizens Deserve Vote on Immigration Enforcement, Says Sheriff
"Saying citizens need to take the lead on the controversial issue of immigration reform in Ohio, Butler County Sheriff Rick Jones said Thursday he will spearhead an effort to have a statewide citizens initiative vote on the ballot this fall," the Enquirer reported. "Our federal government has let us down on immigration reform," Jones said. "I'm afraid our state legislature may not want to act on it, either."
Rory Cooper with the Heritage Foundation says that while President Obama is not serious about amnesty this year, Sen. Harry Reid is seriously wrong. "Effective reforms can be done in a responsible and deliberate manner through discrete steps rather than another bloated bill that hides from the American people what Washington is trying to do to gain even more power and authority over its citizens. What is required is a step-by-step approach, not an ill-conceived "framework" disguised as "comprehensive" reform."
