McCain Tells Obama, Send Troops To Secure Border if You Oppose AZ Law
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said at a news conference that if President Obama doesn't like Arizona's new immigration law, he should send National Guard troops to the border. "If the president doesn't like what the Arizona Legislature and governor may be doing, then I call on the president to immediately call for the dispatch of 3,000 National Guard troops to our border and mandate that 3,000 additional Border Patrol [officers] be sent to our border as well."
Lindsay Graham: Amnesty is the Ultimate in "CYA Politics" for Democrats
Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC) is threatening to stop working on climate legislation because the Democratic leadership in Congress wants to pass amnesty. Graham says that there is no GOP support for an amnesty bill now. "Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., criticized top Democrats for suggesting they may move forward with a bill that he said is not ready for consideration -- and he implied that the move may have more to do with election year politics than policy," Congressional Quarterly says. "'If immigration comes up, that's the ultimate CYA politics,' said Graham, using a slang term for the politics of self-protection. 'What am I supposed to do, write an immigration bill between now and Monday?'"
President Obama and Congressional supporters of amnesty are trying to use passage of SB 1070 in Arizona as a rallying point for pushing legislation. But the law's passage really points to the lack of federal action on enforcement. "Arizona has been leading the way," FAIR spokesman Ira Mehlman said. "But we still believe that Congress needs to get busy enforcing the immigration law on behalf of the American people. If the federal government was doing its job, then we wouldn't have states like Arizona adopting these laws."
The Des Moines Register says Iowa is among states feeling pressure to act on illegal immigration. Oklahoma's tough immigration law passed two years ago has discouraged illegal immigrants from coming to and remaining in Oklahoma, according to immigration reform activists. Thousands of businesses now use E-Verify due to the law.
Roughly 300 employees at Pro's Ranch Markets were fired for having provided false employment information. An audit by ICE found that the employees lied about their eligibility to work in the U.S. "Julie Pace, an attorney for Pro's Ranch Markets, said most of the affected workers gave the company forged documents when asked to demonstrate their eligibility to work in the United States."
