Rep. Chaffetz Introduces True Immigration Reform Resolution

"Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, introduced on Thursday a resolution, backed by several other House freshmen, calling for Congress to get tough on illegal immigration," the Deseret News reported. "Any discussion of comprehensive immigration reform must begin with a renewed commitment to enforce our immigration laws," Chaffetz said. Fax your member of Congress in support of the Chaffetz resolution now.

McCain Says Obama Needs to Lead on Amnesty

Sen. John McCain told the Western Growers Association that President Obama needed to take the lead on passing amnesty this year. He noted that he thought it was unlikely that AgJobs, a bill favored by growers seeking cheap foreign labor, would pass this year. "[Western Growers president] Nassif said the Western Growers provided McCain with policy papers on the group's concerns, including health care costs for seasonal workers and undocumented workers. Western Growers would prefer that part-time seasonal workers be exempt from insurance requirements," The Packer (agricultural news) site wrote.

Restaurant Raid Leads to Charges

"Ramon Ornelas, 42, of Norwalk, is charged by the U.S. Department of Justice with eight counts of harboring and concealing illegal aliens, three counts of mail fraud and seven counts of subscribing to a false tax return," the Port Clinton News Herald reported. The charges stem from a raid at a local restaurant chain run by Ornelas. "According to the report, Ornelas routinely paid workers in cash without withholding FICA and Medicare taxes and submitted falsified documents to the state Department of Job and Family Services."
