Gutierrez Says This is the Year of Amnesty

"It's no surprise that activists grew frustrated last year over the lack of action by Congress and the Obama administration. In an effort to build momentum, Rep. Luis Gutierrez introduced a bill last month that outlines a plan for overhauling the nation's immigration system to create a path to citizenship for millions of undocumented Americans," notes Progress Illinois.

California County Spends Millions Due to Immigration

"San Bernardino County spent nearly $64 million in state and federal money last year to provide welfare benefits to the American-born children of illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants aren't entitled to welfare. But their citizen children are," the San Bernardino Sun writes. "This is a huge burden on our state," said Assemblyman Steve Knight, R-Palmdale, whose district includes Victorville and northwestern San Bernardino County. "Obviously, these kids are U.S. citizens and that's fine. But when you look at it, these parents should have never been here in the first place."

What Can Cause A Libertarian To Support Government Health Care?

It turns out immigration is the issue that can cause libertarians to throw up their hands and support universal health care. Shikha Dalmia with the Reason Foundation says the Senate health care bill is wrong to keep illegal aliens from buying insurance through the taxpayer funded health care exchange. "Undocumented aliens may therefore face the double bind of having to buy coverage but being priced out of the few legal avenues they have. This should trouble anyone not part of the Lou Dobbs fan club, but civil libertarians should find it particularly odious. At the same time the government tells Americans how they must spend their money, it will tell undocumented aliens where they can't spend theirs. Government intrusiveness combined with government discrimination is not a formula for social justice."
