San Francisco Supes Override Mayor's Veto of Sanctuary Law

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors overrode Mayor Gavin Newsom's veto of a new sanctuary law for illegal immigrants, setting up a showdown over the law's enforcement. The City Attorney for San Francisco has issued an opinion that the law conflicts with federal law - specifically provisions of the 1996 Immigration Reform law that prohibit states and localities from stopping their employees from contacting the federal government regarding immigration violations. "The supervisors knew that this amendment was unenforceable," a mayoral spokesman said, "and yet they plowed ahead with it in order to make a political statement."

DHS Starts New Anti-Trafficking Campaign

ICE has started a new initiative to combat human smuggling called "Hidden in Plain Sight." The campaign involves initiatives in 14 cities with a toll-free tipline for people to report businesses that use forced labor or otherwise hold workers in captivity.

Florida Activists Question Immigration Reform Stance of Rubio

Marco Rubio, running for U.S. Senate in Florida, says he is against amnesty. The Miami Herald reports that immigration reform activists in Florida question Rubio's stance on the issue due to his record as speaker of the Florida House. "A lot of us are mad at him because he did block those bills," David Caulkett, with Floridians for Immigration Enforcement told the Herald. "Rubio claims to be anti-amnesty, but the question is, 'Do we trust him?'"
