South Carolina Hiring Law Shows Compliance Possible for Businesses

Six months after a tough state hiring law for illegal immigrants was passed, most South Carolina businesses targeted for investigation are complying with the law. According to the Greenville News, 16 of 600 businesses audited had hiring problems. "The high compliance rate shows how well the federal online database E-verify is working and the need for Congress to continue the system, said state Sen. Larry Martin of Pickens, who helped lead the push for immigration reform."

DHS Readies Biometric Exit Tracking Plan for Air Travelers

The DHS is finalizing plans for a biometric tracking system that will apply to air travelers leaving the U.S. Congress originally mandated an exit-tracking system in 1996, but continual delay and objection by the travel industry and the federal bureaucracy have taken their toll. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) told the Washington Post she was pleased with the outline of the system. "A biometric exit system is critical to tracking the arrival and departure of foreign nationals -- not just through a paper trail, but through fingerprints, photographs, and other fraud-proof biometric identifiers," Feinstein noted. The system is not intended for land borders at this time, however, where the majority of exits by visitors to the U.S. take place.

Grassley Takes DHS to Task for Slow H-1B Fraud Probes

Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) has sent another letter to the DHS about the H-1B program. Grassley notes that since last year, the DHS has begun to investigate H-1B fraud, but he notes that despite the new investigations, actual prosecutions are lagging. "It's important that the work of USCIS fraud detection agents is not ignored, and that employers who violate our immigration system are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law," Grassley wrote.

Former Fairfax County Board Chair Changes Tune on Illegal Immigration

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) has changed his views on illegal immigration since election to Congress, the DC Examiner reports. Connolly was critical of other counties in Virginia for common sense local enforcement measures to stop illegal immigration, but now in Congress he represents those same counties and has taken positions against giving government health insurance to illegal immigrants.
