Senate Votes to End Debate on Bill, Kills Census Amendment

Senators voted 60-39 to stop debate on the Commerce, Justice and Science appropriations bill, preventing debate on an amendment offered by Sen. Vitter (R-LA) that would have had the Census ask about citizenship status. The amendment would have addressed the disparity in representation where some Congressional districts have many more registered voters than others, due to illegal immigration.

Deeds Loss Blamed on Lack of Support for Illegal Immigrants

Thinkprogress.org has a post-mortem of Democrat Creigh Deeds campaign for governor in Virginia. The site blames Deeds loss on, among other things, not supporting the amnesty agenda - including in-state tuition for illegal immigrants. Deeds also voted against giving other state benefits to illegal immigrants.

287(g) Changes Hobble Enforcement

James R. Edwards tells Human Events readers how the Obama administration, despite extending 287(g) to more communities, is hobbling the program by restricting who can be deported. "[T]these changes fly in the face of Congress's original intent for the 287(g) program. There was never any requirement that 287(g) cases involve only actions against 'serious' criminals or even be limited to criminal aliens."

British Politician: Afghan War Helps UK Control Immigration

UK Immigration Minister Phil Woolas told a Parliament Committee that one benefit to British troops fighting in Afghanistan was that the number of asylum seekers had decreased dramatically. "An argument that is not aired strongly enough in my view is the benefit of the presence of our armed forces and other countries' is to help us control immigration."
