Senate Debates Coverage for Illegal Immigrants

Senators were expected to debate coverage for illegal immigrants this weekend as part of an attempt to wrap up health care legislation. "What we are trying to prevent is anyone who is here illegally from getting any federal benefit," said Senator Kent Conrad (D-ND). "Without a verification requirement it's essentially like posting a 55-mile-per-hour speed limit and not having any highway patrol on the road," FAIR spokesman Ira Mehlman told the Boston Globe.

Immigration Raids Open Jobs for American Workers

A new study by the Center for Immigration Studies finds that immigration raids like the one at Swift meatpacking plants open a significant number of jobs for Americans. "Whenever there's an immigration raid, you find white, black and legal immigrant labor lining up to do those jobs that Americans will supposedly not do," said Professor Carol Swain, author of the report.

Immigration Reform Candidates Line Up in Arizona

The Phoenix Business Journal says that Arizonans may have the chance to vote for a slate of candidates for statewide office that are strongly pro-immigration enforcement. "An anti-illegal-immigrant slate would include Thomas running for attorney general, Montgomery running for county attorney, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio running for governor and state Sen. Russell Pearce, R-Ariz., running for sheriff."
