Engine Company Owners Plead Guilty in Wash. Hiring Case

Shirin Dhanani Makalai, 52, and her brother Shafique Dhanani, 46 pled guilty to charges the helped workers file false employment information. The two were indicted as part of a new focus by the Obama administration on prosecuting employers instead of illegal workers. FAIR spokesman Ira Mehlman noted the probation sentences handed out in the case won't likely deter employers.

Michigan Employers Oppose State E-Verify Bills

The Michigan Chamber of Commerce is following the lead of the national Chamber in opposing any measure to make employers accountable for hiring illegal workers. In a release, the Michigan Chamber says House Bills 4355 and 4969 in Michigan would turn employers into the "immigration police" - which is untrue of these bills and other measures that mandate E-Verify use for government contractors.

Woman Sentenced in Marriage Fraud Case

Kwan Tsoi, also known as Joyce Cai was sentenced to 19 months in jail for helping facilitate fraudulent marriages to get green cards for immigrants. Tsoi charged $30,000 for each fake marriage.
