Controversial DHS Report to be Closely Scrutinized by House Panel
The Dept. of Homeland Security report that labeled supporters of immigration control as "extremists" will come under scrutiny by a House Homeland Security Committee which will demand that the department turn over to Congress all records concerning the report within 14 days. Administration to Focus on "Criminal" Deportations
Obama administration enforcement measure could result in a tenfold increase in illegal immigrants who have been convicted of crimes and identified for deportation, current and former U.S. officials said. By matching inmates' fingerprints to federal immigration databases, authorities hope to pinpoint deportable illegal immigrants before they are released from custody. More Hearings on Immigration
Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), who chairs the Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration, Refugees and Border Security, last month initiated talks with the White House on pushing a mass amnesty bill this year, and has begun a series of hearings on immigration, border security and related issues (see this article from Roll Call - access will require a login). After an initial hearing in late April, the Committee will hold another hearing on May 20th, at 10:00 am, that will focus on securing our borders.
