Immigration Laws Exist for a Reason It would be nice if one only had to obey the laws that he or she agreed with and could ignore all the others? Mitchell's article in American Chronicle gives a very good (and simple) explanation of why these laws have to be followed. May 08, 2009

Illegal Immigration Issue Deserves a Reasoned Debate On the heels of the recent refusal by Providence College's leadership to allow former Rep. Tom Tancredo to address a group of students on its campus about the illegal immigration issue, Valley Breeze (Rhode Island) publisher Tom Ward wonders why colleges ban speakers and run from debate instead of encouraging it. Obama to Cut State Criminal Alien Assistance Program President Obama will call for reducing or eliminating 121 programs for $17 billion in savings in fiscal 2010, including many defense cuts the administration already announced. While the Dept. of Homeland Security is poised to see a substantial increase as the administration looks to shore up border security, target employers who hire illegal immigrants and combat the potential for spillover violence from Mexico, one cut will come from the State Criminal Alien Assistance Program, which gives money to states to help defray the cost of incarcerating illegal immigrants who commit crimes. That program is popular with border state lawmakers of both parties, who say the federal government must foot the bill for failing to enforce its borders. Read today's story in the Washington Times. New Workplace Enforcement Viewed as Meaningless The Department of Homeland Security on Thursday issued new work site enforcement guidelines that shift the focus to employers rather than illegal workers. The new guidelines depart from the Bush-era focus on illegal workers and instruct agents to conduct "carefully planned criminal investigations" of employers and to look for evidence that they may be involved in smuggling or visa fraud. Dan Stein, President of FAIR, said that we can expect a series of meaningless and empty pronouncements about enforcement in an effort to mislead the public and to promote the new administration's big amnesty plan.
