WA Senate: Send jailed illegal immigrants to feds

In an attempt to cut spending in light of a $9 billion deficit through the next two-year budget cycle, Washington Governor Chris Gregoire and the Washington State Senate passed a measure that clears the way for the state Department of Corrections to send imprisoned illegal immigrants to federal custody and likely deportation. ACLU takes city to task over license checkpoints

The Escondido, CA, Sheriff says that license checkpoints have helped reduce the number of hit-and-run accidents from more than 600 a year in 2004 to 433 last year - a drop of more than 25%. However, the ACLU accuses the department of using the program to apprehend and deport illegal immigrants and are resulting in suspicion and resentment among many Latinos.
