Posted by: Softwarengineer on October 10, 2008 12:45 PMReading some of the comments that are attached to the newspaper story, a lot of them are the same old line that if we did not have massive immigration, everything would be too expensive for us to purchase. The fact is that periods of low immigration have been some of the best periods of prosperity for the middle class in this country. The fifties through the seventies were very low immigration, and middle class prosperity and union membership were at record high levels. Nor does the "lettuce would be $5" argument take into account the cost of schooling the children born in this country to illegals. Is it just a coincidence that the state with the most immigrants, California, is on the verge of economic collapse, and a large part of that is providing for the education of the larger families of immigrants? The governor recently called for an emergency 7 billion dollar federal loan to meet their obligations. But, this is what you've wanted, this is what you've encouraged, so you pay for it. And all the people who pointed out these crises were coming in that state were dismissed as racist alarmists. We also can move to hydroponic farming with a lot of vegetables. It's more expensive to set up, but in the end, it produces higher yields and uses less labor. And that labor is more like factory work, not the backbreaking stoop labor that makes those jobs undesirable. A lot of us remember when teenagers and college students took a lot of the restaurant and grocery store jobs now taken by immigrants. Those kids took the money and spent it here. The article talks about Jessica Makolin, 21, a model citizen who was Ann Arbor News Young Citizen of the Year in 2004 for helping in food banks...and now she's "standing on the other side of the counter." She calls this "ironic." I also call it tragic and irresponsible. While the MSM brushes off the issue of how immigration displaces students in the workplace, our nation's youth go hungry.
