Immigration Standoff in Congress

The Arizona Republic analyzes the continuing standoff in Congress over immigrationenforcement legislation. The article cites liberal California Democrat Howard Berman saying that the enforcement-first SAVE Act would probably pass if it came to a vote because there would be enough Republicans joined by Democrats worried about their reelection if they were to vote against the legislation. But it notes the hard-line opposition to the bill by the Democratic Party leadership. One of the efforts to discredit the SAVE Act has been to attempt to discredit the E-Verify employment document verification system currently in operation as costly and error-prone. An article in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel provides an interesting testimonial to the value of that verification system by the Cargill meat-packing company. “’It's been a good tool to screen out people whose documents aren't matching up,’ said Mark Klein, a spokesman for the company, which has been using E-Verify since the pilot program began in 1996.”

NOTHING WILL CHANGE UNTIL THESE CORPORATE WHORE POLITICIANS, LIKE PELOSI AND REID JUST TO NAME A FEW, ARE THROWN OUT OF OFFICE FOR GOOD...

YOUR VOTES MATTER, FOR THE SAKE OF OUR COUNTRY...

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH WITH THESE TRAITORS!

Anyone who dismisses e-verify as a necessary tool against illegal immigration and fraud is obviously knee-deep in the exploitation and profiteering that come w/ cheap labor and high profits!

Posted by: takn on May 12, 2008 01:43 PM

The House Democratic leadership continued its assault on immigration enforcement at a May 6 House Ways & Means Subcommittee. This is the time to push aside Democratic leadership's plan for rigged hearings, as well as their larger plan to grant legal work permits for millions of illegal aliens currently holding jobs and huge increases in H-2B and H-1B visas for all types of foreign workers.

CONTACT THESE TRAITORS, AND TELL THEM TO ENFORCE THE LAW, AND STOP SELLING US OUT, OR THEY`LL BE OUT OF A JOB AS WELL.

VOTE ANTI-INCUMBENT!

More B S! The democrats just want the illegal aliens to milk taxpayers for free benefits. If they want to represent illegal aliens instead of American citizens, why don't Pelosi and Reed move to Mexico?

Posted by: Rick S on May 12, 2008 03:38 PM

How hypocritical can the Democratic Party be? People like Howard Berman, Nancy Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein, Zoe Lofgren, letc. are supposed to be for the American working stiff. We know the Republicans are totally clueless when it comes to the working class. But these Democrats have been selling out the blue collar and working class Americans on this illegal immigration issue for years now.

As a long time Californian taxpayer I would like to thank the above snakes in the Demcratic Party for the enormous taxes I have paid to this state and yet can't drive on decent roads and have parks, schools, and public places overrun by illegal alien and other gangs. Your doing a fine job Nancy--in continuing to destroy California.

EVEN MOST THE DEMOCRATS THAT HAVEN'T SIGNED UP TO THE SAVE ACT PROBABLY WANT IT TOO

But Obama and Clinton [their babes], with campaign finance bribe money want amnesty, so they keep their mouths shut.

We need campaign finance reform desparately in America, but you have to blame the populist voters on that issue, they put it really low on the list in error. Perhaps blame mainstream media for lack of credible information on it too though, brainwashing the voters in apathy.

CONGRESS,
WHO SIDE ARE YOU ON, ILLEGALS OR AMERICAN CITIZEN!

Posted by: SUSAN MARIANO on May 13, 2008 12:02 AM

Independent voter, why do you care about H1 visas when you and your couch potato buddies are not having the needed skill levels for those jobs anyways? Skilled workers on H1 and L1 are paying large sums for years into your SS and Medicare funds and if we have to leave this country we cant take that money back or see benefits we paid for. We are supporting your lazy lifestyles and healthcare for your parents, grandparents, schools for you kids and so many things. It is you and your kind who are eating our money, so stop BSing around.

Posted by: H1 Bee on May 13, 2008 12:50 PM

Hey H1 bee I have my own business, and I would never hire a foreigner (who can barely speak english, and you have to redo their work 2 or 3 times too get it rite). I can use H-1B, bit never ever will, because it`s a scam and everyone familiar with it knows that. I will always hire an American worker, because the propaganda you hear that we need more hi-tech foreigners is a bunch of B.S. That`s for the greedy big business and the corporate slave politicians.

Posted by: Independent Voter on May 13, 2008 03:45 PM

H1 Bee

No thanks for your contributions. You are taking much more away with over-population and lack of respect for the host nation. And I am very sure you will stick around here for the SS/Medicare too.

Lazy voter

Posted by: MS on May 14, 2008 09:26 AM

To H1 Bee, there are plenty of qualified applicants for those H1B jobs. Any employment agency could fill them all in a week. We ALL know that it's just companies wanting cheap labor. Obviously, you are inly in this country to take an American's job, not because you like Americans or our culture. Please leave and don't come back.

Posted by: Dave A on May 14, 2008 11:39 AM

Why are some employers complaining about E-Verify? Because E-Verify makes it easier to hire American Workers before foreign workers! Isn't that "the way we like it?"

Those that hire American citizens find it easy and accurate with only about 1% rejected.

But those employers operating on the fringe by avoiding American workers and looking for cheap labor (foreign workers with green cards and illegal immigrants) find it difficult because they cause delays and have a much higher rejection rate of about 7%.

About 5% of all E-Verify rejections are received by persons who are not work authorized. Of these most either choose not to contest the rejection or indicate that they will contest the finding but then fail to follow through.

Now we know why critics dislike E-Verify so much.

Posted by: E-Verifyable on May 14, 2008 12:53 PM

H1 Bee,

You have no idea what you are talking about.

First the H1B Visa is only supposed to be used for labor shortages in mostly tech fields. The worst kept secret is there are no labor shortages here. H1B Visas are only used to try and push out more profits at the expense of the American Worker.

The only way your argument could hold water is it was only a small hand full of Americans being replaced by H1B Visa holders but instead it's tens of thousands of Americans being replaced so companies can meet unrealistic profit targets in a given quarter so the CEOs and Execs can get their outrageous bonuses. This is about greed plain and simple.

I have yet to meet an H1B Visa holder who was more qualified than the 100's of Americans / fellow co-workers I've seen laid off of the last several years. Most don't have the knowledge, experience or both needed for long term goals. Usually their language and communication skills are lacking and it takes five times as long to get anything done.

Brian

Stick it where the sun doesn't shine, H1 Bee! Americans are putting out billions to support illegals who come here. If you're so concerned about your benefits, then why don't you stay in your own country? Why do you continue to come here, if we are so bad and your countries and people are so great? No one here thinks H1B workers are all they are cracked up to be, anyway. Most might have skills, but no better than the ones Americans have, and most of them don't understand our standards and way of doing things, anyway. This country wasn't built by couch potatoes or workers like you, so hush up, OK?

Health Care for Detained Aliens

The Washington Post and other media are currently focused on the issue of inadequate or inappropriate medical care of deportable alien prisoners. While the Post documents from records and insider comments that some alien prisoners have suffered from denied or delayed medical treatment that has resulted in deaths, this focus largely ignores the context of increasing detentions. That context was provided in a New York Times article last week in which the DHS immigration officials explained that, “In the 2004 fiscal year … the agency detained 231,804 immigrants, and about one out of every 9,200 died. In fiscal 2007, when the agency detained a total of 311,213 immigrants, roughly one out of every 28,000 died. Immigration officials said the agency spent $91.6 million last year on health care for its detention centers, an 82 percent increase since 2004.” The 2004 data suggest the number of detainee deaths was about 90, and the 2007 data suggest that the number had dropped to about 11.

(FAIR Comment: Another contextual issue not dealt with in the Washington Post series so far (2 of 4 installments have appeared) is whether the alien detainees are receiving the same care as non-alien prisoners (or better or worse) and whether the aliens would have had the same medical problems had they not been in detention and whether, in that case, they would have received better medical attention.)

And have they focused on how many Americans may have died because services or resources were not available because they are increasingly strained by our obligations to care for those who have no legal right to be here!

Let's talk about the issue of inadequate or inappropriate medical care of our veterans first, and then maybe, just maybe Americans will be willing to address the issue of inadequate or inappropriate medical care of these criminal aliens.

How many American citizen prisoners die each year from diseases illegals bring to the prisons?

Posted by: CoolGary on May 13, 2008 10:11 AM

I wouldn't mind paying for 'healthcare' for detained aliens - IF - it was limited to necessary urgent care given with the understanding that they were going back right now to their rightful country where they will receive any needed ongoing care.

Posted by: Bill Dexter on May 13, 2008 01:16 PM

School is almost out. Every school district in the nation has a fleet of buses. Why not start using them if they are sitting idle - fill them with illegals and start toward the border. Give them plenty of water and box lunches. I'll offer my state of Texas to be the first in the country to start a bus brigade. Get them aross the border and let Calderon worry about them. Let's save a few for Bush, McCain, Johnny Sutton and all the Congess persons who are pro-illegal.

Posted by: June on May 13, 2008 03:17 PM

Millions of Americans are without healthcare and don't get their needs taken care of, and idiots in this country are worrying about detained illegals. Sick, downright sick.

Posted by: Born American on May 13, 2008 07:32 PM

We should use the money allotted for foreign aid to pay these costs before giving ANY money to a foreign government. Paying for foreigner's health-care is afterall foreign aid.

53 Illegal Aliens Found Captive At Phoenix Drop House

"Fifty-three illegal immigrants found Sunday had been held against their will in a fortified home by suspected smugglers demanding more money, authorities said. The group of rescued immigrants included two 13-year-old girls, three women and a mentally disabled man. The rest were men, Department of Public Safety spokesman Harold Sanders said," the AP reports. "Authorities began investigating Saturday after getting a tip that immigrants were being held captive. Sanders said the smugglers wanted an average of $2,500 for each person's release. The single-family home where they were kept had been fortified to prevent escape and weapons were seized at the location. The suspected smugglers also took away the immigrants' shoes so they couldn't run off."

It is unbelievable that a bunch of scum bag politicians are actually prohibiting legislation like the SAVE ACT and E-VERIFY to become permanent law. These politicians are putting another layer of poverty, disease, and crime on an economy that is now in recession and headed for a 1929 depression. How in God's name can they do this to the American people??? These people are Quislings taking The United States of America into a third world cesspool.

Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid, and that bag of garbage in the White House are doing this to The United States of America----and----coming up next year,no matter who it is, it looks like more of the same.

It appears to me that The United States of America is being controlled by a small cabal of very wealthy predators who control all three candidates for President. The object,,,destroy the middle class of The United States of America, and set up an elite ruling class,,,,,,,with the rest a bunch of docile, servile, cringing peasants. A POLICE STATE------

Posted by: T. Jamieson on May 12, 2008 11:58 AM

OK!

The article only ended saying, "The rescued immigrants were turned over to U.S. Customs and Immigration Enforcement". It does not say whether they were being deported, sent to work at Taco Bell or McDonalds or whether the "suspected smugglers" were caught or if they let them go free "for lack of evidence" or what.

What good is part of the story?
