Dole Says More Immigration Help Needed for Cities, States

"If Pender County Sheriff Carson Smith apprehends a criminal who happens to be an illegal immigrant, there's not much he can do. 'Right now we can only do some very fundamental checks with the names that are given to us and the date of birth,' said Smith. 'And the information that's given to us many times is not the correct information we have,'" WWAY-TV reports. "But North Carolina Senator Elizabeth Dole has a plan to make the correct information available statewide. During a visit to Pender County Saturday, Dole told Sheriff Smith and local media that she wants to give local law enforcement agencies resources, training and jurisdiction to process illegal immigrants who commit crimes--and ultimately have them deported."

AgJOBS Expected on the Senate Floor THIS WEEK!

Just a few days ago, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) released a revised version of her AgJOBS legislation. Senate staffers are telling FAIR that they now expect Senator Feinstein and Senator Larry Craig (R-ID) to offer the new language as an amendment to the Farm Bill (H.R.2419) scheduled for the Senate floor THIS WEEK. Voters Say They Want More Done to End Illegal Immigration

"Until Tuesday night, the Democratic presidential candidates had largely ignored the subject of illegal immigration. The topic, Democratic strategists concluded, was fraught with too much potential for alienating general election voters. But after Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) struggled to answer a question during Tuesday's debate about whether she supports a proposal to give driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, the topic burst into the forefront of the primary campaign and exposed a quandary for Democratic candidates, who broadly embrace immigrant-friendly policies," the Washington Post reports. "But unlike the Republicans, who have been very specific in how they would fight illegal immigration, the Democrats have said little except when asked about the issue, not addressing the most explosive elements, such as whether to build a fence on the southern U.S. border or to give immigrants sanctuary in urban areas. 'Any Democrat who tried to use immigration as a wedge issue would find themselves without much of a constituency in the party,' [Pollster] Penn said, explaining why it has not been a hot topic in the Democratic nominating contest."

Washington Post Editors Blast Candidates' Tough Stance on Immigration

"Anxious about an unpopular president and an electorate trending Democratic, Northern Virginia Republicans devised a Hail Mary strategy in the summer in hopes of averting an electoral rout. In races for state and local offices this fall, they would focus relentlessly on illegal immigration, a festering problem that the federal government has failed to address. And they would do so with little regard for the real-world constraints of state and local officials to address a problem of national scope," the Washington Post says in an editorial.
