"Some Oregon high schools are adopting Mexico's public school curriculum to help educate Spanish-speaking students with textbooks, an online Web site, DVDs and CDs provided free by Mexico to teach math, science and even U.S. history. The Oregon Department of Education and Mexico's Secretariat of Public Education are discussing aligning their curricula so courses will be valid in both countries," the AP reports. "Until now, Oregon school districts generally have relied on bilingual aides or used Spanish material different from the English material others are studying. 'That's not enough,' said Patrick Burk, chief policy officer with the superintendent's office of the Oregon Department of Education. He said the idea is minimal disruption for immigrant Latinos.
'The availability of resources is astounding,' said Burk, who flew to Mexico with Oregon curriculum officials in August to discuss making equivalency standards official. 'We're able to serve the students so much better if we're working together.'"
The Elite View on Illegal Immigration: No Problema
"Mexican immigrants have yet to overwhelm schools and social services, as they have in other states with large rural populations. In Iowa, however, a new and potentially explosive phenomenon is surfacing: a link between illegal immigration and crime. Earlier this month, 22 people—17 of them immigrants illegally in the United States—were arrested on federal drug-trafficking and weapons charges after a bust in Des Moines. The Des Moines Register quoted officials describing a 'massive drug ring.' All 17 of the illegals were from Mexico, and all 22 were accused of distributing and selling methamphetamine—much of which may have been made in and imported from Mexico," says Newsweek writer Howard Fineman on his campaign blog. [Fineman also tastelessly compares the immigration issue to a campaign trail "IED" - email him here.]
Meanwhile, Newt Gingrich told reporters that illegal immigration was one of the key fault lines between elite Americans (who believe immigration can only be good) and regular Americans who have to live with the reality of illegal (and mass legal) immigration. "The average American wants the borders tightly policed and those who cross illegally sent home, explained the former House Speaker from Georgia. The elites -- whom he defined as the national media, Washington politicians and the political class of consultants and commentators -- are in opposition. 'The average American is not for an anti-immigrant policy in this country,' said Gingrich. But these ordinary citizens want immigrants to enter the country legally, become Americans when they get here, and become immersed in English classes, not enrolled in bilingual education, he said."
Colorado Lawsuit Challenges Feds to Enforce the Law
"An attorney for the federal government has asked a judge to throw out a lawsuit filed by the state -- which alleges that the government failed to do enough to stop illegal immigration. Colorado voters gave their approval to the lawsuit when they passed Referendum K last November with 56 percent of the vote. It directs the state attorney general to sue the federal government to force them to do a better job of enforcing immigration laws," ABC-7 Denver reports. "'Essentially the state ... through the attorney general, is arguing that the world has changed since Sept. 11, 2001 and it's no longer acceptable for our borders to be porous,' said Nate Strauch, communications director for the Colorado attorney general. 'We're essentially arguing that the federal government needs to do a better job and that they are in fact required by the Constitution to do a better job to protect us from terrorist threats coming through the borders.'"
Western Union, Helping Your Illegally Earned Money Go Farther
"Western Union, the largest money transmitter with more than 17 percent of the global market, announced a $50 million, five-year philanthropic initiative to help migrant families. The Colorado-based company said it would underwrite educational grants, offer free wire transfers during humanitarian relief efforts and enlist some of its 312,000 agents and representatives as financial mentors to businesses and individuals," the Washington Post's Marcela Sanchez writes. "Some immigrant advocate groups, however, are not impressed by Western Union's altruism. Last week the Transnational Institute for Grassroots Research and Action (TIGRA), which claims to represent more than 150 immigrant organizations in the United States, called for a boycott of Western Union, arguing that its new campaign is a 'marketing gimmick' that will do little to benefit immigrants here or their families abroad. TIGRA is particularly concerned that initiatives such as Western Union's give immigrants little say on where the money is spent. Rather, TIGRA would have Western Union and other money transmitters donate directly to a fund managed by TIGRA." [FAIR comment: Any time a big pot of money is involved there's going to be a power grab or shakedown for it. TIGRA's action isn't surprising in that context. Not to mention the "management fees" etc. that TIGRA would inevitably pay itself.]
Missouri Gov. Pledges Support for Local Enforcement of Immigration Law
"Gov. Matt Blunt today reached out to local law enforcement officials to offer support in their efforts in the fight against illegal immigration. Gov. Blunt discussed his recent directives to help curb illegal activity and outlined his plans to seek funding to help state and local law enforcement agencies pursue agreements with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to enforce immigration laws as federally deputized ICE agents," Blunt's office said in a release yesterday. "I recently directed state law enforcement agencies to take an even more active role in the fight against illegal immigration," Blunt wrote in a letter to county sheriffs and local police chiefs. "While directing state law enforcement agencies to undertake this effort, I have also heard from many local leaders who are interested in having this 287g designation as well. This letter reaffirms my support for any local request for that status. If you do choose to apply, we stand ready to assist you in your efforts. '"
"Erik Jovani Martinez should have been in prison and not jaywalking the day he gunned down Phoenix police Officer Nick Erfle. But despite a lengthy criminal history and a deportation, Martinez remained free, even after he was arrested again in the Valley just two months after he had been forced to leave the country in 2006. Scottsdale police say they didn't know Martinez, 22, was an illegal immigrant or that he had been deported when they arrested him in May 2006 for grabbing his girlfriend's arm twice during a quarrel," the Arizona Republic reports. "Had Scottsdale police known, Martinez should have been jailed and should have faced federal charges for returning to the country illegally. A conviction would have earned him up to 20 years in prison. Instead, he posted $300 bail and was released."
