"The House Homeland Security Committee demanded this week that the Homeland Security Department describe what system and technology will be used to determine when foreigners leave the country or overstay their visits. In a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, the lawmakers said they want a strategic plan by next Monday for the US-VISIT foreigner tracking system, including cost estimates and timelines for an exit component. The lawmakers said Congress has been waiting on the plan for almost two years, even though more than $1.3 billion has been spent on VISIT to date," GovExec.com reports. "According to a December Government Accountability Office report, Homeland Security Department officials have concluded that installing a biometric exit capability at land ports of entry would cause major disruptions and come with a huge price tag. In their letter, the lawmakers said they are worried the department might try to build an exit system into VISIT that does not use biometrics -- a move that would be contrary to the law."
Director of Popular "Christmas Story" Film Killed by Drunk-Driving Illegal Alien
"A Mexican national accused of causing the crash that killed "A Christmas Story" director Bob Clark and his son will face deportation proceedings once the charges against him are resolved, officials said Thursday. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement put an immigration hold Wednesday on Hector Velazquez-Nava, a 24-year-old illegal immigrant living in Los Angeles, said agency spokeswoman Virginia Kice," the AP reports. "Police say Velazquez-Nava steered his sport utility vehicle into the wrong lane of Pacific Coast Highway in Pacific Palisades early Wednesday, striking Clark's sedan head-on. The filmmaker and his son, Ariel Hanrath-Clark, 22, died at the scene.
Authorities said Velazquez-Nava was driving without a license. He and his passenger were treated for minor injuries."
Illegal Aliens Pay Taxes . . . And Get It Back in Rebates
IRS: "We Want Your [Illegal] Money"
"Politicians and activists campaigning for a crackdown on illegal immigration frequently complain that the nation's estimated 12 million undocumented residents violate U.S. law by not paying taxes, as well as by being in the U.S. without permission. But Mrs. Castillo's booming business shows how some of the workers who are here in defiance of one arm of the U.S. government -- the Department of Homeland Security -- are filing federal tax returns with the aggressive encouragement of another -- the Internal Revenue Service," the Wall Street Journal writes. "'If someone is working without authorization in this country, he or she is not absolved of tax liability,' IRS Commissioner Mark Everson, a former immigration official, said in testimony before Congress last year. Last week, speaking to the National Press Club, he added, 'We want your money whether you are here legally or not and whether you earned it legally or not.'"
One couple had a next tax bill of $46. "Mrs. Castillo jots down the couple's ITIN numbers on their 1040 form. Last year, $1,464.88 in Social Security and $342.60 in Medicare were deducted from Mr. Espinoza's wages. His wife paid several hundred dollars in Social Security and Medicare, too. In addition, $3,508 in federal taxes was withheld from their combined salaries. Mrs. Castillo figures they will get a $3,462 refund from the IRS, putting their total federal tax bill at $46."
