Illegal Alien Rallies Fizzle, Anti-Amnesty Protesters Out in Force
"Dueling immigration rallies Sunday marked the one-year anniversary of a massive pro-immigrant demonstration that jammed downtown Los Angeles streets with a half-million protesters and framed new debate in Washington. Sunday's rallies didn't come close to bringing the crowds of last year's event. Several hundred immigrant rights activists marched to downtown's Federal Building from the city's historical center to protest immigration raids and demand reform. The pro-immigrant crowd was too thin to encircle the Federal Building as planned, police said," the AP reports. "Blocks away, anti-illegal immigration demonstrators demanded stiffer enforcement of U.S. borders and verbally clashed with pro-immigration forces . . . Jefferson Azevedo, a Brazilian immigrant, said he didn't consider any immigrant illegal. 'We all know this is Mexican land,' he said. 'They didn't cross the border. The border crossed them.'"

Nashville Authorities Say New 287(g) Agreement Will Catch Immigrants Before They Commit More Serious Crimes
"Late last year, Metro Police arrested a 29-year-old Nashville Hispanic male after Youth Services detectives were called to Centennial Pediatric Hospital, where doctors just told his 13-year-old stepdaughter that she was pregnant. According to police, when asked who the father was, the 13-year-old girl said it had to be her stepfather . . . As they currently do with all foreign-born inmates, Davidson County sheriff’s deputies forwarded the Hispanic male’s information to the federal immigration database in Vermont. Vermont responded -- as they do when the arresting charge is as serious as murder or child rape -- and within a week it was confirmed that this particular individual had entered the United States illegally."
"Under Sheriff Daron Hall’s 287 (g) program, which is designed to instantly screen every foreign-born person brought to jail by Metro Police, this immigrant male would, though, have been identified as having been an illegal alien had police brought him to jail after his 2001 arrest for having false identification. Had 287(g) been active in 2001, Hall said it is likely that he would have been released with an official Notice to Appear (NTA) before a federal immigration judge in Memphis to prove his immigration status."
Sen. Durbin Wants "Americans First" Hiring Policy; Plans Change to H-1B System
"A battle is brewing in Congress over how to treat high-skilled foreign workers who want to come to the U.S. for jobs. Last week, Representatives Luis Gutierrez (D-Ill.) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) introduced a plan for immigration reform that includes a sharp increase in the number of visas available to skilled workers coming to the U.S. on a temporary basis . . . . But BusinessWeek has learned that Senator Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), is formulating an alternative proposal that could impose much tighter standards on such workers, in an effort to address concerns that some employers have abused the program. One key point Durbin is considering is whether companies that want to bring workers into the country on a temporary work visa should be required to try to hire American workers before considering non-U.S. laborers," BusinessWeek writes.
"Durbin is considering the tougher standards for companies that want to bring temporary foreign workers into the country under the H-1B visa program. According to a summary of Durbin's draft proposal, before they could use such visas, companies would have to give a written pledge, or "attestation," that they made a good-faith effort to hire American workers first and that they were not displacing any American workers by bringing in non-U.S. employees. That would mark a substantial change. Today, companies can hire workers on the H-1B program simply by paying the prevailing wage in a certain job."

"Teams assigned to make sure foreigners ordered out of the United States actually leave have a backlog of more than 600,000 cases and can't accurately account for the fugitives' whereabouts, the government reported Monday. The report by the Homeland Security Department's inspector general found that the effectiveness of teams assigned to find the fugitives was hampered by 'insufficient detention capacity, limitations of an immigration database and inadequate working space," the AP reports. "The number of illegal immigrants in the United States has been estimated at between 11.5 million and 12 million. About 5.4 percent of them are believed to be 'fugitive aliens,' those who have failed to leave the country after being ordered out. The inspector general found there is not enough bed space available to detain such fugitives and that agents are hampered by an inaccurate database. Other factors that limit the teams' effectiveness are insufficient staffing, the report said."
