Colorado Referendum to Limit Business's Ability to Deduct Illegal Wages Leading

With 2745 of 3161 precincts reporting, Colorado Referendum H is winning by a margin of 661,000 to 642,000. "Employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants could lose valuable state tax deductions if Referendum H is approved by voters. The measure would increase 'state income taxes owed for some businesses that deduct wages or other compensation paid to unauthorized aliens.' It requires businesses to admit to hiring illegal immigrants, disclose the amount paid to those workers and prohibits businesses from deducting those wages as a business expense," according to a Denver Post write-up. Referendum K, another immigration measure, is winning handily, 56-42 percent. "Referendum K 'requires the state of Colorado to sue the federal government to demand enforcement of existing federal immigration laws.' The initiative was created during the special session of the Legislature over the summer to address immigration issues. Proponents of the referendum say it makes a statement to Congress about the importance of immigration laws," says the Post.

Bush Reaction to GOP Defeat: Plans Amnesty Push With New Democrat Majority

A Victory for the Lou Dobbs Democrats?

"President Bush plans to address Tuesday's election results in a press conference at 1 pm Wednesday. Waking up on Wednesday to a new balance of power in Washington, he picked up the phone and invited House speaker-in-waiting Nancy Pelosi to lunch. 'They had a very good conversation. He congratulated her on their wins,'deputy White House press secretary Dana Perino said about Bush’s call to Pelosi the morning after Democrats took control of the House in Tuesday’s election," the AP reported.

Last night White House spokesman Tony Snow said the Democratic takeover of the House would provide new opportunities to advance "comprehensive immigration reform" - read mass amnesty for illegal aliens.

In his press conference today, Bush said, "Yes, I think we have a better chance of getting immigration reform now with a Democrat-controlled Congress."

"I told you this before the election. I told you, 'The reason we don't have amnesty and a guest worker program is because of the Republicans in the House.' Now with Democrats running the place you're going to get it and the president's excited about it," Rush Limbaugh said today.

FAIR issued a press release today in response to the election results - Support for Immigration Enforcement was a Key Factor in Many Democratic Victories

Slate's Jacob Weisberg credits the new "Lou Dobbs Democrats" for the Democratic victory. "An even harder-edged nationalism defined many of the critical House races, where Democrats called for a moratorium on trade agreements, for canceling existing ones, or, in some cases, for slapping protective trade tariffs on China. These candidates also lumped illegal immigrants together with terrorists and demanded fencing and militarization of the Mexican border. In Pennsylvania, Democratic challengers Chris Carney and Patrick Murphy defeated Republican incumbents by accusing them of destroying good jobs by voting for the Central American Free Trade Agreement and being soft on illegal immigration," says Weisberg.

Arizona Immigration Propositions Pass

"Arizona's four immigration propositions are passing, so far claiming more than 70 percent of the vote with 70 percent of polls reporting. Proposition 103, one of the more controversial measures on the ballot, seeks to make English the state's official language. It calls for all government action to be conducted in English, although there are numerous exemptions, such as legal proceedings. Bilingual ballots would not be affected because of federal law," the Arizona Republic reports. "Another controversial measure, Proposition 300, aims to ban undocumented immigrants from using state funds for adult education and childcare. Opponents said students of undocumented immigrants would suffer because they cannot benefit from in-state college tuition. Two propositions would have an immediate impact in Arizona courts. Proposition 100 would prevent illegal immigrants from receiving bail, thus stopping them from fleeing the country before trial . . . Proposition 102 aims to end illegal immigrants suing for punitive damages, limiting their awards to actual damages."

Actress Adrienne Shelly Killed By Illegal Alien Day Laborer

"He told detectives that he had hit her in the face and had thought she was dead. So, the police said, he wrapped a sheet around her neck and hanged her from a shower curtain rod, figuring that the police would think suicide. But he was wrong on both counts. It was the hanging that killed Adrienne Shelly, a Manhattan actress and a mother, the authorities said yesterday. And it was the ruse of a fake suicide that ultimately led detectives to the man charged with killing her," the New York Times reports. "Such was the courtroom revelation at the arraignment of Diego Pillco, 19, an illegal immigrant from Ecuador who is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Ms. Shelly, 40, last week. The case has given pause to even the most experienced police investigators, who call it one of the most macabre killings in memory . . . Ultimately, investigators said, Mr. Pillco admitted under questioning by detectives that he had been working in a third-floor apartment beneath Ms. Shelly’s, that she had complained about construction noise, and that their confrontation had convulsed into violence, ending in Ms. Shelly’s death."
