National Day Of Protest Tomorrow Targets Illegal Immigration

State and local immigration reform groups across the nation are holding a national day of protest on Saturday, January 7, from 7:30-9:30AM in their respective areas at illegal worker pick-up sites. Sign up today to join this national demonstration through the Connecticut Citizens for Immigration Reform web site. Groups are invited to participate, as are individuals.

"A stretch of road in Spring Valley is among dozens of day labor- hiring sites where activists plan to turn out tomorrow for a nationwide "Stop the Invasion" protest against illegal immigration," notes the Journal-News. "Paul Streitz of the group Connecticut Citizens for Immigration Control initiated the protests. 'Congress is coming back into session, and it's time to show that the American people, across the wide number of states and so forth, want immigration reform and immigration control,' he said."

Pro-Illegal Alien Mayors Say They Won't Enforce Immigration Law

"The mayors and police chiefs of St. Paul and Minneapolis have come out staunchly against a plan announced by Gov. Tim Pawlenty to roll back 'sanctuary laws' that restrict immigration enforcement by local police. St. Paul passed such an ordinance in May 2004, and Pawlenty suggested Tuesday that the state scrap such policies as part of an initiative to crack down on illegal immigration and immigrants," the Pioneer Press reports. "'I think that if you went to most Minnesotans and said, 'We have cities that are prohibiting their police officers from asking about immigration status, not requiring it but having the discretion to ask,' most Minnesotans would agree with my perspective that law enforcement should at least be given the option to inquire about immigration status,' Pawlenty said in response."

Terror Imam Finally Faces Deportation

"A Cleveland imam convicted of hiding terrorist ties has agreed to leave the United States, ending his deportation case, his attorney and government officials said Thursday. The agreement allows Fawaz Damra to resettle in Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Sudan, Egypt or the Palestinian territories, said Greg Gagne, a spokesman for the Justice Department's Executive Office for Immigration Review," the AP reports.

Debbie Schlussel has more details about Damra. "We also note that this deportation order would not have been possible were it not for the excellent work of star ICE attorney and Assistant Chief Counsel in Michigan, Mark Jebson (one of our HEROES of 2005). We note the 2-foot high stack of exhibits he served on the defense at the hearing we attended. It was clear that Damra had a losing case . . . Finally, we hope the evil saga of Mr. Damra is a lesson to foolish misguided clerics and politicians everywhere. As we noted, Damra was feted, ad absurdum, by kowtowing Jewish and Christian leaders and clerics, as well as Ohio politicians--all hailing him as a moderate Muslim . . . when he was anything but, and uttered the most vile of statements wishing death upon Jews and Christians. Damra was an Islamic terrorist in our midst parading as something else. But he isn't the first, and he won't be the last."

Chertoff Says DHS Will Cooperate More With Local Police

"On Wednesday, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told a gathering of county sheriffs from across the country that he plans to initiate today a program uniting federal and local agencies in the fight against those who make their money smuggling illegal immigrants and drugs into this country," the Desert Sun reported. "Milwaukee County (Wis.) Sheriff David Clarke Jr. said he appreciated the secretary's words, however he doubts the effectiveness of the programs . . . 'We don't have authority to detain illegals because that's a federal law and we can't enforce federal laws,' he said. 'We need local statutes that allow us to arrest illegal immigrants.'"
