One Mother's Loss, Our National Shame

"One of my children is no longer among us, but rather in Heaven: Eric Daniel Brown . . . He was a prodigy child who was beginning to bloom into a responsible young man and as an achiever of dreams - until he was killed in a hit-run. It was allegedly operated by two illegal immigrants with a criminal record, who were driving a truck belonging to other illegal immigrants," says Zaida Brown. "We need to enforce our immigration laws because just as my child was killed and nobody is 'responsible,' tomorrow it could be your child — whether American, Native American, Hispanic, European, Asian, African-American or a beautiful mix of races. If you reside in United States and abide by its laws, you and your family deserve to be protected by them." Related story

Citizen Rallies Target Illegal Immigration

"Conservative Republicans turned up the heat Monday in their campaign to end state benefits for illegal immigrants, using a rally which was broadcast live from the [Georgia] Capitol steps to press their cause. Legislation blocking taxpayer-funded benefits to those who are not citizens is pending in the state Senate and has been designated a top priority of Senate Republican leaders for the 2006 session, which begins in January," the AP reports. "I don't hear a peep out of the governor's office about the illegal immigration crisis that most of the rest of us cannot and will not any longer ignore," said D.A. King of the Dustin Inman Society.

Also, in Oregon "Saturday October 15, 2005 was a great day for all Oregonians, when over 150 citizens came together in the rain at the capitol. The event was organized by Oregonians for Immigration Reform; www.oregonir.org to honor 'The Minutemen' organization and three Oregon Minutemen, Mike Forest, Bob Rathgeber (who is making his second trip to the border) and myself, Michael Armstrong. www.minutemanhq.com." Citizen Caucus writes. "A fine display of peaceful citizen activism took place this day, there only demand that our state and federal government do something absolutely unthinkable, enforce our immigration laws and stop pandering to illegal aliens. Unlawful entry is a crime, providing jobs to illegal aliens is a crime, helping illegal aliens obtain drivers licenses, registering them to vote, providing tax payer funded benefits is a crime."

Newsweek Cover: Broken Borders - Immigration, Black Markets Out of Control

"While governments have spent billions since 9/11 to fortify their borders against everything from potential terrorists to illegal drugs and nuclear materials, the size and sophistication of those trafficking operations that have been rolled up has continued to increase . . . Smuggling revenues are spectacular. From 1992 to 2002 the total size of the global drug trade more than doubled to $900 billion annually," Newsweek reports in a cover story on smuggling. "Combating trafficking starts with the recognition that hypocrisy reigns in the way we talk about all these trades. It's common to denounce illegal immigrants while benefiting from industries for whom they are a lifeline to profitability. We decry the evils of drugs and complain loudly about infringed copyrights, but do little to staunch the demand that fuels both drugrunning and counterfeiting."

Teacher Suspended for Immigration Heresy Won't Kowtow to PC Lobby

"The Orange County teacher who wrote a letter many called racist said she is sorry if her words offended people, but she is not apologizing for writing the letter . . . Hall said she has the right to free speech and stands behind her words. 'I do think we ought to close the doors and I gave reasons after the premise sentence that I think we ought to close the doors to all migration and I gave reasons why,' Hall said." [correction: Hall was suspended, not fired from her job as a teacher in Orlando, Florida after the letter to her Congressman was published in a Spanish language paper. She then resigned and plans to seek monetary damages.]

Conservative Scholar Hits Bush on Immigration, Gets Fired

"In the latest sign of the deepening split among conservatives over how far to go in challenging President Bush, Bruce Bartlett, a Republican commentator who has been increasingly critical of the White House, was dismissed on Monday as a senior fellow at the National Center for Policy Analysis, a conservative research group based in Dallas," the New York Times reports. Bartlett's latest column on Townhall.com criticized Bush's immigration and other policies. Bartlett's new book, titled 'The Impostor: How George W. Bush Bankrupted America and Betrayed the Reagan Legacy,' is due out later this year. "In any case, instead of the conservative movement rebelling against Bush as I described, it’s more as if the conservative movement is expelling the anti-Bush rebels from its ranks. Where all this will end I haven’t the foggiest, except that I can’t see how, even if the conservative establishment purges every strong Bush critic, the marriage of Bush and the conservative movement can be put together again," says Lawrence Auster of Bartlett's dismissal.

"Return Every Single Illegal Entrant -- No Exceptions"

"Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff promised Tuesday to end the "catch and release" policy that has allowed tens of thousands of non-Mexican illegal aliens to disappear within the United States. 'Return every single illegal entrant _ no exceptions,' Chertoff said in prepared testimony to a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on proposals to overhaul the immigration system," the AP writes. "Chertoff was joined by Labor Secretary Elaine Chao in presenting administration views on the illegal immigrant problem . . . Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, a leading proponent of changing immigration policy, said the Judiciary Committee, now occupied with Supreme Court nominations and other issues, won't put together an immigration bill until at least January."
