Iowa Supreme Court: State Can Deny Licenses to Illegal Aliens
"The Iowa Supreme Court ruled today that immigrants in Iowa illegally are not entitled to a driver’s license. The court upheld a Polk County District Court judge’s ruling," the AP reports. "We conclude the state’s licensing scheme is rationally related to the legitimate state interest of ’not allowing its governmental machinery to be a facilitator for the concealment of illegal aliens," the ruling said.
National Review Online contributor Andrew McCarthy takes the Wall Street Journal to task for an editorial defending asylum practices that make it easy for terrorists to get into the U.S. McCarthy cites the example of Ramsey Yousef, who masterminded the first World Trade Center attack. "Yousef, of course, did not show up for his asylum hearing. He had told those oh-so-rigorous screeners that he'd be living in Texas. But they never checked, and he, instead, hunkered down in Jersey City, New Jersey, where he spent the ensuing months plotting a massive terrorist attack. His cell included other aliens, including one whose authority to be in the United States (working in the well-known farming belt of Brooklyn, New York) was based on participation in the Immigration Service's Agricultural Worker Program. On February 26, 1993, the cell led by Yousef detonated a bomb in the basement parking lot of the World Trade Center, killing six people (including a pregnant woman), injuring over 1,000, causing nearly a billion dollars in damage, and declaring militant Islam's war against the United States."
Judge Blocks Implementation of NY Ban on Licenses for Illegal Aliens
"A judge ordered yesterday that the state stop taking away the driver's licenses of immigrants in New York who do not have Social Security cards, saying that the Department of Motor Vehicles is not authorized to enforce immigration law or to make new rules without public notice," the New York Times writes. "The order by Justice Karen S. Smith of State Supreme Court in Manhattan was temporary, but lawyers on both sides said it reflected her preliminary opinion that immigrant drivers would suffer irreparable harm unless the crackdown was stopped while the court considers a class-action lawsuit brought on their behalf, and that the immigrants' suit was likely to prevail."
"Senate sponsor Jim Holt, R-Springdale, said Monday he will go to the voters if the Legislature does not approve Senate Bill 206, which would require proof of citizenship to receive state benefits," the Arkansas News says. "Well, if it doesn't pass this session, we will launch a citizens' initiative," Holt said during an appearance on Lou Dobb's TV show. "... When I have Mexican citizens who are here as legal residents telling me we have a problem with illegal immigration and benefits are being drawn from the state, that's something we need to address and I intend to deal with that."
"Eleven Republican state lawmakers want to ban Arizona cities and counties from spending tax money on undocumented immigrants who line the streets waiting for jobs," the Arizona Republic writes. "The legislators say day-labor centers are a failure and encourage illegal immigration. Rep. Colette Rosati, a Scottsdale Republican and main sponsor of House Bill 2592, said Arizonans are clamoring to curb illegal immigration, not to encourage it."
Mexican State Produces New, Improved Illegal Alien Guide Complete With DVD
"Officials in a Mexican state have published their own 87-page handbook for potential migrants to the United States, adding fuel to an international debate over whether such guides encourage illegal border-crossers," the Arizona Republic reports. "The Guide for the Yucatecan Migrant, published by the southeastern state of Yucatán, comes with an accompanying DVD in Spanish and Mayan. It tells migrants how to apply for U.S. work visas but also gives detailed safety advice for crossing illegally, including where to find water in the desert and how to avoid the most dangerous areas. The guide includes a section specifically about Arizona." FAIR Western Field Director Rick Oltman told the paper, "That open border is worth more than a billion dollars a month to Mexico, so they're going to do whatever they can to keep it going,"
FAIR has obtained the full pdf version of the guide - you can download it at this link [The download will take a while - file size is 7 mb.]
Rep. Hayworth Leads Effort Against Social Security Agreement with Mexico
"Scottsdale Congressman J.D. Hayworth is fast solidifying his position as one of the top immigration hawks not only in Arizona but also on Capitol Hill," the Phoenix Business Journal Reports. "Now the Republican congressman is leading opposition to a proposed deal between the Bush administration and the Mexican government to allow for some Mexican nationals, including illegal immigrants, to receive some Social Security benefits if they worked in the United States."
