Dairy Farmers Face Employer Audits, Part of Nationwide Audits

Vermont dairy farmers are among the 1,000 businesses targeted for hiring audits by ICE. Although the effort in Vermont drew protests from Sen. Leahy (D-VT), who told the AP that "I'm disappointed that this comes amid a crisis in dairy prices and at the start of the holiday season."

It's not surprising that these farms would be audited since Vermont's Agriculture Secretary Roger Allbee publicly said he knew farms were hiring illegal workers and he didn't care. "Everyone knows some of these people are illegal. The system is broken. There's the need for labor," Allbee told ABC News back in May.

Along with the audits, DHS Secretary Napolitano announced the start of a promotional program for businesses that use E-Verify. Businesses that use E-Verify will be able to put a logo with "I E-Verify" on their products, to let consumers know they hire legal workers.
