Census Debate Intensifies Over Counting Illegal Immigrants
Senators David Vitter of Louisiana and Bob Bennett of Utah, both Republican, want to change how the Census does its count so that illegal aliens are counted. Sen. Vitter points out that Louisiana lost a congressional seat in 2000 thanks to illegal immigration, which unfairly inflated the population of several states. Hispanic leaders who support a Census boycott to protest the lack of an amnesty support the Vitter amendment, believing it will put more pressure on Congress to pass amnesty.
