Michael Barone: Changing Facts Mean Change for Immigration Michael Barone says the reduction in the rate of illegal immigration over the past 2 years has a chance to become permanent, thanks to declining demographic pressure in Latin America as well as a dearth of low-skilled jobs due to the housing depression. "As one who has tended to support comprehensive bills, I think we might, at a time when high unemployment means we have less need for unskilled workers, have to consider moving away from family reunification and toward high skill levels in our criteria for legal immigration, as Canada and Australia already do." |
