Stimulus Bill in Conference – Your Calls Needed to Have E-Verify Included

By Dan Stein, President of FAIR
After passing the Senate by a 61-37 vote, the Stimulus Bill is now in conference negotiations between the House and Senate to decide which final version will be presented to President Obama for his signature. Senate negotiators include Senators Inouye (D-HI), Baucus (D-MT), Reid (D-NV), Grassley (R-IA), and Cochran (R-MS). On the House side, conferees include Reps. Charlie Rangel (D-NY), Henry Waxman (D-CA), David Obey (D-WI), Dave Camp (R-MI), and Jerry Lewis (R-CA). As E-Verify was not included in the final Senate version that passed yesterday (although it had been included in the House version), it is important that we reach out to these elected officials and demand that this successful program is in the final version of the bill. By verifying that social security numbers are legitimate and match the name of new hires, E-Verify will help ensure that jobs generated as a result of this Stimulus Bill go to those that are legally-eligible to work in the U.S. Without E-Verify, up to 300,000 illegal aliens could receive jobs created by the taxpayer funded stimulus bill. Please call your elected officials today and tell them that they must include E-Verify in this bill. Thank you for standing up for the American worker. You can reach your Representatives and Senators through the Capitol switchboard: (202) 224-3121.
