A Work Authorization System that Doesn't Work . . .


Exactly What Business Wants, Says DHS Official

Authorization to continue the E-Verify program is set to expire in November. Congress is currently debating reauthorization of the program. Just about everyone agrees that controlling illegal immigration depends on stopping illegal aliens from finding jobs, and E-Verify has proven to be the most effective tool for preventing the hiring of illegal aliens. So reauthorization should be a no-brainer.

Not so fast. Business interests that really want to go on hiring illegal aliens are mounting an all-out effort to handicap E-Verify, or replace it with an alternative system that is guaranteed to fail. An employment verification system that doesn’t work, writes Stewart Baker, assistant secretary of DHS, is exactly what many business interests want.
