Missouri Legislative Showdown over Immigration Reform
Missouri Governor Matt Blunt has been pushing hard for adoption of legislation to crack down on
illegal immigration. Legislation that has resulted and that has passed the House is aimed at preventing illegal immigrants from working and obtaining public benefits. In the Senate, passage of the legislation appeared to be on track until an amendment was proposed and passed that added a requirement for employers to also verify the work status of independent contractors working for them. With that change the issue would have to go back to the House, and could cause the bill to die as the legislature is in its final hours. Rising to the threat that the legislation might die, Gov. Blunt has issued a threat that he'll keep lawmakers at work if they don't pass his illegal immigration plan. Stay tuned.
