Immigrant Assimilation — Good News or Bad News?
Today’s Washington Post reports “Study Says Foreigners In U.S. Adapt Quickly.” The lead-in sentence is, “Immigrants of the past quarter-century have been assimilating in the United States at a notably faster rate than did previous generations, according to a study released today [by the Manhattan Inst.].” If you read far enough down in the article to find out that this report raises red flags. “Vigdor [a Duke University professor and author of the study] also said his findings included cause for concern: most notably, the fact that the 2006 assimilation index of 28 is less than the previous low point of 42 in 1920. The difference indicates the substantial change in the composition of today's immigrants compared with earlier immigration waves.”
[FAIR Comment: The dichotomy between this headline good news and the red flags sounds like the fact that any group that starts at a very low number does not have to move very far up the scale to be double or triple the starting point, i.e. you only have to add one to one to increase by 100 percent. And it sounds as if the assimilation scale created by the author starts most of today’s immigrants much lower on the scale than earlier immigrants.]

Common sense should not even be an issue.
I will be voting for the Libertarian candidate this time.

I'm ashamed that people would go along with them!
Sounds a bit like another case of skewing the facts to fit the intended outcome...
So, how many of those "assimilated immigrants" are illegals?
Assimilating my backside! At any given time, in any public place I hear a minimum of 5 different languages going on around me from people who clearly seem to have no intention of assimilating to this country.
I blame our government’s failure to regulate/control the level of legal immigration, and its failure to enforce existing immigration law. Not to mention the propensity of the business community to accommodate all these foreigners. For instance, the Lowe’s in my area provides Spanish subtitles throughout the store, not to mention the 5 languages available at the customer service desk. Needless to say I will not shop at Lowe’s.
If we really expect people to assimilate, we ought to treat them as though they are capable of doing so. If we continue to provide for them in their native tongue and customs, why in God’s name would they feel the need to adjust? It is not our responsibility to accommodate their needs; it is their duty to respectfully assimilate to our culture, as they are for all intents and purposes in our home!!
And to all you immigrants who find our culture inferior, beneath you, or offensive to your delicate sensitivities – Don’t let the screen door hit you on the way out!!

I live in Illinois where Obama et al accept all legal and illegal immigrants.
The town where I live has a very large population of illegal immigrants - none of whom will speak English because they don't have to.
Most of these immigrants came over on ''vacation'' from eastern european countries and have never had to leave.
Going into a local grocery store is like attending a third world bazaar.
I am the foreigner in my own country now.
The big change is not in the immigrants, it is in the country they emmigrate to. The immigrants of old came to a country that was expanding, had manufacturing jobs and a huge trade surplus. Immigrants today come to a country that has welfare, affirmative action and a huge discrimination lawsuit industry. They have assimilated to this very well.
I'm just waiting for someone to call me a racist because I expect immigrants to assimilate to the America way of life.

Brian , assimilation is nice, but isn't even the main point to me. Existing immigration law makes illegal immigration a crime. That is reason enough to stop it. It is against the law. Period. It is the lawlessness, that works like a chain reaction with these illegal aliens, where they go from breaking one law after another that is the problem. I don't want lawless people to assimilate. I want lawabiding people to assimilate.
