U.S. Treasurer: Illegal Alien Remittances Help Mexico


"U.S. Treasurer Anna Escobedo Cabral on Wednesday called remittances a driving force for Mexico's economic growth and said the public and private sectors should do more to encourage migrants' families to invest their money. Speaking at the Mexico City Bankers Club, Cabral said Mexico's financial sector should do more to bring remittances into formal financial channels, including making credit, insurance and mortgage products easily available," the AP reports. "Also speaking at the meeting, Louisiana State Treasurer John Kennedy said Mexican workers were a key element in his state's recovery from Hurricane Katrina."
