Increased Border Enforcement = Decreased Illegal Entry
For those who assert that building fencing or other increased
border control measures are useless because the inexorable tide of illegal aliens will simply find another way into the country, preliminary data for 2006 border apprehensions indicate that measures such as sending national guard units to major illegal entry corridors and reducing ‘catch and release’ practices is having an effect. An immigration official says it appears that apprehensions during the fiscal year that ended in September have fallen (to 1.1 million from 1.2 million). It would be expected that increased enforcement would cause apprehensions to rise because of the increased effort. If, instead, they fell, it suggests that attempted illegal entry has declined because of the deterrent effect of the increased enforcement effort.
