Verdict on Bush Speech: Too Little, Too Late Reaction to President Bush's speech last night was negative. FAIR President Dan Stein: "Immigration enforcement with demonstrable results must be a prerequisite to any other policy changes, not a media event designed to make the American public swallow an unpopular amnesty and guest worker program. After years of doing absolutely nothing to deal with this problem, the American public needs to see a real strategy implemented which results in illegal aliens getting discouraged and returning to their homelands in significant numbers." Michelle Malkin: "Bush has lost touch with reality, arguing that guest worker/amnesty will reduce the incentive to cross the border. Reality check." Hugh Hewitt: "Memo to Tony Snow: The blogosphere/talk radio callers/e-mailers are turning against this speech in a decisive fashion. They simply do not believe the Administration is really committed to border enforcement, and the spokespeople sent out to back up the president's message aren't doing that job. Period." Debbie Schlussel: Bush doesn't care about the borders, or he wouldn't have waited until 5.5 years into his presidency to do something about it. But he does care about elections. And those are just 6 months away. Timing is everything. Rep. Steve King (R-IA) "I don't think it moves [the debate] very much. It demonstrated a willingness to discuss enforcement, but the commitment hasn't been there for 5+ years." Mexicans Planning to Cross Border: "No guard, no wall will keep us from crossing." Lou Dobbs: "Long on rhetoric and short on specifics." Washington Post: "The president's focus on border control last night was aimed at mollifying conservative Republican lawmakers and disgruntled voters, who have accused him of paying insufficient attention to tightening the border and enforcing immigration laws." ****James R. Edwards: "Mr. Bush's primetime televised speech Monday night amounted to more empty words. The speech betrayed that comprehensive immigration reform is really code for amnesty and virtually open borders." James Gimpel: "The president's speech was not reassuring and it proves that the business lobby is still driving the bus on this issue over at the White House. The president's insistence on a 'comprehensive' approach was code for 'let's water down anything by way of serious enforcement.' This speech was a broadside directed toward the House GOP, signaling that the White House favors the Senate's permissive approach." National Review Editor Rich Lowry: "Having the National Guard sharpen pencils and fetch coffee for the Border Patrol can't fix our broken immigration system. It is no substitute for a fence, nor for real interior enforcement that punishes employers for hiring illegal labor. The Bush approach to the latter also relies on symbolism. A 26-state immigration raid garnered extensive press attention last month, but most of the aliens arrested were quickly released again." Powerline: "He should have given the speech I told him to. As soon as he started talking about guest worker programs and the impossibility of deporting 11 million illegals, it was all over. President Bush keeps trying to find the middle ground, on this and many other issues. But sometimes, there isn't a viable middle ground. This is one of those instances." Cheap-slave-Labor profiteers have him in their packet. Posted by: Some Mexican on May 16, 2006 10:52 AM So, it's 'not feasible' to deport 12 million illegal aliens. It is, however, feasible to keep them, employ them, provide medical care for them, subsidize and educate their children. . .and then do the same for their 'extended family'. . .and then do the same for the for the next illegal alien who hops the fence. Now THAT's some arithmatic I'd like to see. Posted by: Bill Dexter on May 16, 2006 11:37 AM Amen to what Some Mexican states! This "president" is a greedy little coward who loves another people more than his own. He is no patriot. We must open our eyes to what he is--a corporate Babylon-builder and conspirator--putting business and profit above anyone and anything else. Has anyone looked lately to see if the numbers "666" are tattooed on his body? And a question we have all asked on this site before: Once these "folks" become legalized or whatever, will they continue to provide the cheap labor business so desires or, as "Americans", will they now be able to demand American wages? If so, won't the businesses cast these "folks" aside and just begin to import even more, new illegals that they can abuse? I think we all know the answer is "yes". There will be no end to this addiction for exploitable labor. Posted by: J on May 16, 2006 11:46 AM Is anybody really surprised? Every politician I know who has "seen the light" on immigration hasn't changed their position by one iota - they've just rearranged their words and made them sound a little tougher. Bush, in case you haven't noticed, is absolutely unwilling to ever admit he was wrong. Has he ever once done so? No, not even on the Miers nomination or the Iraq War. This is called the sin of Pride. And if it's not feasible to deport 12 million illegals, how feasible is it to do background checks on 12 million, verify that they're not a security threat, and have been living here for a certain period of time? Posted by: Craig on May 16, 2006 12:16 PM Oh my God Posted by: princess on May 16, 2006 12:35 PM Bush, you are not giving us a nation of immigrants. You are making us a hispanic nation. If you are too stupid to see the difference, you can be impeached. We are tired of your crap. Posted by: Patriot-L on May 16, 2006 12:39 PM This bumbling buffoon could be as good for our cause as the bumbling buffoon illegal mexicans marching in OUR streets and stumbling through our alleys and streets? Once again, he has nothing to say in a very unconvincing slow minded manner. I Love it! And I refused to watch it! Posted by: cicerores on May 16, 2006 12:55 PM ITS AN UGLY MASSIVE MESS, ESPECIALLY INTERIOR ENFORCEMENT OF ILLEGAL EMPLOYERS, AS WE CAN"T DO THIS ADEQUATELY WITHOUT RUFFLING A LOT OF US EMPLOYERS I'd like to see how much money Hormel Meats, Tyson Meats, etc are donating simultaneously to the Democrats and Republicans to let them keep their illegal cheap labor. I want to see the spread sheets in writing from both the Democrats and Republicans on how big these campaign contributions are from illegal employers. We don't need Senate approval and Congress compromise, we just need ENFORCEMENT OF EXISTING LAWS. This is not going to be pretty to enforce our country's laws, its going to be ugly. The campaign contributions from illegal employers can legally be called organized crime "HUSH MONEY". Any US political party that accepted money from these crooks should send it back. Its time to do an audit of our political parties and find out whose paying off who. Make it a law ASAP, all employees hired must pay for their own background check (its only about $20) and sign the background check authorization with social security number for the employer. The employer MUST CALL THE NAME ATTACHED TO THE SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER when they get the background check written results and verify the SSN person is actually applying for a job with them. If they are not the same person or deceased, the employer, by law, must notify both the ICE and the SSA that a felony was committed, i.e., falsification of SSN. Its that easy. But we will continue with what is being supported by a wide section of American people. The reforms have to be comprehensive and i am dissapointed that the president seems to be caving inn to nativists as the editorial page of the New york times had opined. Posted by: people james on May 16, 2006 01:12 PM It is the wise Republican representative who distances him/herself from Mr. Bush, for Mr. Bush betrayed his country and American citizens. Would the Honorable Congressman Tom Tancredo consider running for president? I most certainly would vote for him; not any burning bush. Posted by: Brian B. Mickelwait on May 16, 2006 01:40 PM I would really like to know where our President has been the past 6 years. Even being the governor of Texas, obviously he has no clue whats going on nor does he care. He's more concerned with putting relatives of his staff into top level positions who also have no clue whats going on. Sending 5000-6000 national guard to the border is a joke and i hope the american people dont buy into his AMNESTY scheme. When he says no more "catch and release", when is that going to begin, probably when he leaves office or never. Catch and release has been going on for years. Its sad when another country dictates to the American people who should be here and call the american people racist when they (the American people) dont agree. I am a 20 year veteran Border Patrol Agent and just last week i was stopping at a store when a hispanic female came out and in her exact words to me "viva la raza, your the illegal and we're taking over" and yes i was in uniform. I just laughed at her until she saw my name tag which is a hispanic last name " the she proceeded to call me a traitor to the race." I just smiled and went on about my business even though she and her brother wanted a confrontation with me. On another note, about the presidents' speech. Why did he bring up that tearful, heart-warming story about the immigrant serving in the Marines (in which I do myself admire) that wanted to be a US Citizen. People who serve in our armed forces should be allowed some degree of first in line or close to it legalization. BUT WHAT DISTURBS ME IS THAT HE DOESN'T MENTION THE SHERIFF DEPUTY THAT WAS SHOT BY 4 ILLEGALS FROM EL SALVADOR, OR THE HOME INVASIONS BY ILLEGALS FROM GUATEMALA, OR THE CAR THEFTS FROM MEXICANS WHO RACE TO GET TO THE BRIDGE AND ARE HOME FREE, OR ALL THE POLISH AND HUNGARIAN VISA OVERSTAYS THAT IVE ENCOUNTERRED, all by the way were "caught and released". NOT ONCE DID HE MENTION ANYTHING ABOUT ALL THE CRIMES THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE SUFFERED AT THE HANDS OF ILLEGAL ALIENS, SOME OF WHOM HAVE BEEN DEPORTED SEVERAL TIMES ALREADY AND ARE BACK HERE COMMITTING MORE CRIMES. His logic is that these are all honest hard working people who only want a better life. Well who doesn't. Will my kids and grandkids be able to get a college education and a job, probably not if they dont know spanish, or that all the guest worker children will get their freeby tuition and scholarships. If he is going to give amnesty to 20 million people,WHY STOP THERE, go ahead advise and advertise to all the countries around the world, send us all your poor and unskilled laborers, we take anyone and everyone regardless of how you respect our borders or laws. Protest in our streets and will give you what you demand. As long as you vote for THAT ONE (joke). Anyway, alot of agents as well as myself are ready to call it quits being that an agent trying to protect the border is tired of getting shot at and rocks thown at in the front while the U.S. Government is behind you stabbing you in the back. Hello 3rd world, Good luck America, God Bless, and good bye to the American way of life. Posted by: one who knows on May 16, 2006 02:02 PM One of these days the American people are going to wake up and figure out that their phones are tapped. Then they will realize that their computers are tapped. When they use certain words they are spied upon, our government might show you 6 people who think they should spy on us, but Fidel Castro will be calling Bush friend, just like Fox if we don't get him out of office. Our governments regret that they got caught, is a worse insult than the act. Show us all the big time spies you caught by tapping our phones. Get off making all Hispanics Americans, it is not fair for all the other people from other countries. As soon as Hispanics control the vote, they will stop immigration. Just look at the laws in their country. The people of the U.S. deserve freedom of speech, but, today, millions were afraid to talk on their phone, or use their computer. I am one. I charge the government with intimidation through communism. I charge the government of taking my money for Illegal Aliens benefits instead of deporting them, as The Law of the United States demands. Who said you could babble about new laws for years and not enforce the laws we have? We don't want the U.S. to become Mexico. There is already a Mexico. Posted by: Pete on May 16, 2006 03:00 PM I know my people, they come here only for the dollar not to be Americans. I am related to some who overstay their visas and have babies here, applying for WIC, medicaid, and other social programs. Many of the men are hardworking making only $350 cash a week, and eventually end up knocking up some illegal girl and they also leach off the social services that many Americans cannot. We are importing illiterate, uneducated, poverty stricken baby factories. Trust me I know my people. If you want proof just go to any hospital in Texas. Posted by: I know my people on May 16, 2006 03:23 PM I was disgusted to hear Bush's lies and pro Amnesty doubletalk. Bush is a liar and has ZERO credibility with me. His Amnesty will destroy what some of us remember as America. I feel very sad for my children, for the kind of country (Mexica) they will be forced to grow up in. Posted by: Robert on May 16, 2006 03:42 PM Having heard Bush's full speech, and noting the 100 million immigrant fallout forcast by the think -tanks, I say there are 4 core steps that must be taken: Posted by: Allan S. on May 16, 2006 03:57 PM It is the banks and greedy financial institutions that are now in full control of the politicians in the United States. The situation is unbelievabley dangerous. If Americans don't get out of their funk, fog, we will slip into a modern facist state. [some people believe we're already there] Just because the constitution is behind a glass enclosure, does'nt for one minute mean that it is protected. This is the document that states, in essence, that the people are NOT OWNED by the government, but are to be served by the government. It is a one of a kind document that testifys to the worth of the individual. The exact opposite of what is happening today. Think of the Supreme Courts decision allowing citizens property to be seized, so it can be used for "better" reasons. If people believe that the present lowlifes in Washington have their best interests at heart, and are working to serve them, then you are'nt alert to what is going on. The President made a statement yesterday that he's repeated before and it is really weird. In essence he keeps saying we can't have border security unless we have a guest worker program. This sounds like blackmail. I won't allow security unless you give me this. A fence and people guarding the border, create border security, a guest worker program lets people into the country. Support Mr. Stein's organization. Tell yourgrandfather, grandmother, parents, friends, and anyone who will listen to get with it,especially when it's time to vote. Follow the advice in the Stein report. Posted by: Bobby on May 16, 2006 04:27 PM I started to laugh as he told the story of the gunnery sargeant...26 years in the military...wounded in Iraq and just now wanting to be an American citizen? LOL Everyone knows that military personnel of foreign descent are eligible for citizenship after 3 years of service which means Gunnery Sgt. Delajon is only 23 years late. Also, I was very bothered by this part of the speech... ...Fifth, we must honor the great American tradition of the melting pot, which has made us one nation out of many peoples. The success of our country depends upon helping newcomers assimilate into our society, and embrace our common identity as Americans. Americans are bound together by our shared ideals, an appreciation of our history, respect for the flag we fly, and an ability to speak and write the English language. English is also the key to unlocking the opportunity of America. English allows newcomers to go from picking crops to opening a grocery, from cleaning offices to running offices, from a life of low-paying jobs to a diploma, a career, and a home of their own. When immigrants assimilate and advance in our society, they realize their dreams, they renew our spirit, and they add to the unity of America... Aren't these people supposed to be doing those low end jobs, temporarily, of course, that Americans won't do? What happens when we educate and offer privilege and promotion to those who are supposed to be here "temporarily"...? What about the generations of our own childeren? Where do their opportunities go if they must end up competing against the children of people who are supposed to be here "temporarily"? Who will replace those workers once they get educated and move up in the world? Are we really supposed to believe this simply won't continue to be the revolving door that no one ever closes? Employers will simply keep bringing in impoverished, likely sickly and ignorant souls to be their slaves!
Posted by: takn on May 16, 2006 04:57 PM The only thing in Bush's speech I was happy about was the biometric ID (but now let's see how long it will take to get it) and the fact that he emphasized speaking English (don't know how he will insure that happens) Posted by: Born American on May 16, 2006 05:49 PM I give up. The only thing that we can do is get rid of congress. We must vote out anyone who has sold this country out. Democrat or Republican. Are we just stupid or what. I know a whole bunch of men and women, both white and black who have lost their jobs to illegals. To say different is a lie; and when they have been able to get employment; their pay is cut from 1/3 to 1/2 iof what they had been making. I was wrong to vote for Bush two times. That is my fault. When this country is the next third world country in line, then let's talk; maybe then, we will take action. The only thing I feel I can do right now, is start cherishing what is left of America. My friends and I have taken a pledge to buy American and Support American only. In all things. I will not frequent establishments of any kind where illegal and their legal helpers work. I canceled a contract with the builders who were going to give me a new roof... since many of us down here have to replace our roofing since last hurricane season; and many of us are fed up with both illegal and legal immigration, we have companies that hire American, even if they don't make as much as the others may; hiring slave labor. As the guy I talked to said, he does not feel like he is losing anything. . . and it was easy for me to sign on the dotted line with his company and have to wait, at least another 2 weeks for his services. There is no other country in the world that let in illegals and put them ahead of their own people in the country. In France, I had to sign a paper, and on it, it was stated implicidly that I could not work in their country. When I have visited the Carribbean I was told when I had to leave; no ifs, ands or buts. We are a very giving country, and when in time of need we give generously; and sometimes to people who hate us.... I'm sick of it. Why do we bow down to Mexico and racist charlitan Vincente Fox? I have no hatred for anyone; let alone Hispanics; but if it comes to me or them... I choose me and mine. Just like they do. I am not saying that anyone else has to take my positions or do the things that I am doing. Just think on these things: 1. There are no jobs that Americans will not do. 2. Fuel costs are so high, I almost want to get my bike out, and park my car! If I could ride the 60 miles (to/fro) work I would. 3. The value of the dollar is at an all time low. 4. Our trade agreements with places like China are the worst most destabalizing agreements ever... this another country that Bush kowtows to. 5. Out sourcing is so high, I cannot make a customer service call and talk to an American! 6. Now Add Immigration to all of that. What are we going to do? If what I say makes me racist or a hater; for the first time in my life I'll wear that label with Pride.

I am currently in CO and have been listening to Tancredo's unwavering responses on our local talk radio show (khow.com - Peter Boyles show) so I am keeping the faith.
WE MUST NOT BE DISTRACTED OR DIVIDED. Whatever our previous or current political affiliations, immigration reform must remain our primary focus. Our differences are trivial, but the divide and conquer strategy will continue to be used to keep us from standing together. I don't think he's a real citizen of the United States, but if he is, he identifies with conquering our proud nation and letting some Socialist dictator run us. Thank you all for your kind words on my contributions to FAIR's illegal immigration Blog. I have learned much from all of you too. I have been asked to run for Senate in Washington before, but have been fighting the "good fight" here at home on many fights. If I did run, it would have to be on an Independent Ticket, as the demigods brainlessly overpopulating our country in the Democratic Party horrify me and the Republican stand on Iraq horrifies me too. A friend and me came up with its name, "NO GROWTH". WE have so many so called leader's that are suppose to be doing what the people want, and seem to be paying attention only to the small few that are squeaking.
