CSPAN Covering Senate Judiciary Amnesty Hearing Live

CSPAN is currently covering the Senate Judiciary Committee Guest Worker Amnesty hearing live. FreeRepublic has a discussion thread about the hearing as well. FAIR will post and send out an update of the committee hearing later today. The Washington Post had two stories this weekend about the failures of guest worker programs. The AP noted that "Proponents of a guest worker program to address the chaos of illegal immigration have a hard sell in front of them. Similar programs in the past have been plagued by abuses and have done little to stem the influx of undocumented workers." The AP coverage was prompted by the AFL-CIO's condemnation of guest worker programs last week. Tamar Jacoby, who supports amnesty, also says guest worker programs don't work in her Washington Post op-ed. Her solution is simply to give automatic citizenship to millions of people each year to stop illegal immigration. "Sure, a citizenship plan looks like a bigger gamble; like the workers, the changes that come with it will be permanent. But surely it would be better to face up to that change and shape it in a way consistent with our values." Also see: Senate Grapples With Illegal Immigration.

Update: 5:00 p.m. - the committee has adopted the McCain-Kennedy guest worker provisions into the bill.
