"The goal of [Georgia] SB 529 is twofold - level the playing field for all businesses and make Georgia an unappealing place for those who
break the law in search of jobs. The bill would do a handful of specific things, and its backers say those changes are the first step in a multi-year process to deal with a problem the federal government has all but ignored," the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes. "Every department and agency of the state would have to participate in a federal program that provided electronic verification of an employee's legal status. It would require contractors and subcontractors with the state to participate in the program. 'You're using taxpayer dollars, so it's appropriate that the taxpayers would expect that the government would follow the law,' [Rep. Chip] Rogers said. Anyone who violates the provision would lose the state contract. The state commissioner of labor would have to come up with the regulations to administer the program."
