While it is common knowledge that the employer sanctions law adopted in 1996 is toothless because of the ready availability of fake IDs, a recent expose on this topic in the Las Vegas Review-Journal documents a less-widely reported aspect of counterfeit documents. In addition to fake Social Security cards and immigration documents, illegal alien workers are able to by-pass health screening that is intended to protect the public from communicable diseases from food handlers. The Review-Journal writes, “Prices range from $100 to $220 for a resident alien card, commonly called a green card, while a fake Social Security card costs $40 to $80. A replica of the health card issued by the Clark County Health District can fetch $200. The Health District charges $35 for a legitimate card, which signifies a food handler has been immunized for hepatitis A and screened for tuberculosis.”
