NEW DETENTION SPACE INCLUDED IN 9/11 BILL DRAWS DEBATE

"Tucked into the new intelligence bill signed Friday by President George W. Bush is a tripling of detention space for immigrants. Although it's just one component of the intelligence overhaul stemming from the recommendations of the 9/11 Commission, the spike in detention space - from the current 21,000 beds to 61,000 in five years - provoked sharp criticism from both representatives for immigrants and organizations that want immigration curbed,' says Newsday. "More detention space is needed, but what the bill provided isn't enough," said Rick Oltman of FAIR "We have 400,000 absconders running loose in this country, most of them out there committing crimes. They should be picked up, and there will need to be a place to put them."
