OP-ED PERSPECTIVES ON WAL-MART ARRESTS

LA Times columnist Robert Scheer writes dismissively of the recent immigration raids targeting Wal-Mart, saying they were a "public relations move." "If we really wanted to stop illegal immigrant workers from coming into this country, it would be straightforward and simple: require a tamper-proof identity card for any applicant for a job in this country and impose stiff criminal penalties on employers who hire people who do not provide the requisite card."

Columnist Debra Saunders says the raid shows the hypocrisy of immigrant advocates who called for tougher enforcement against employers. "There was a time when Democrats would push for the government to put less of an emphasis on deporting illegal immigrants so, they argued, more emphasis would go toward prosecuting corporations that employ illegal immigrants. Now that the feds are doing just that, you see the pro-illegal immigration corner's real agenda: no enforcement."
