GAO REPORT: U.S. STILL UNABLE TO FIND IMMIGRANTS
“The government could not find nearly half the 4,112 registered immigrants to whom the government wanted to talk following the Sept. 11 attacks, according to a [GAO] report issued Thursday,” AP reported. “Visitors arriving in the United States for extended stays must report their address to the government. They are supposed to let the INS know when they move, but many may not know this because the INS doesn't publicize the requirement, the report said. . . . The GAO recommended that the agency begin a program to publicize the need for aliens to tell the INS when they move and to distribute change-of-address forms, to ensure that addresses of aliens are current and complete, and to make it clear that those aliens who do not comply with the change-of-address requirements will be punished.”
