THE POVERTY-IMMIGRATION CONNECTION
Several letter writers to the LA Times say the paper should give more coverage to the problems of high immigration and the connection to growing poverty. "Most of the figures run on the numbers of immigrants, both legal and illegal, indicate that California is absorbing approximately 40% of the national immigration figure. This, coupled with a very high fertility rate among certain ethnic groups, precludes the ability to create enough jobs no matter what type of work they might be willing to accept," one letter says.
