ID FRAUD CRACKDOWN LED TO TERRORISM ARRESTS

The Detroit News says "The indictment of four men accused of belonging to a covert cell to help terrorists is part of a larger, three-pronged federal crackdown in Metro Detroit that targets identity fraud, funding for overseas terrorist groups and the proliferation of phony immigration documents." "Prosecuting immigrants for having fake identification and other documents has become a top priority for federal law enforcement in Metro Detroit," the paper notes. "Many of the 17 hijackers in the Sept. 11 attacks had fake identification." "Obviously, it isn't that difficult to get phony documents," the deputy INS district director said. "Additional attention is being paid to immigration cases. If you use phony documents, there are serious consequences to violating the law."
