GEYER: MEANING OF CITIZENSHIP LOST IN MODERN AMERICA


Syndicated columnist Georgie Ann Geyer, author of America No More: The Death of Citizenship, says that the U.S. faces an 'internal unraveling.' "To put it most simply," she writes, "we are moving from a classically transformational society to a concessionary society. Instead of imposing our principles on others within America, or inspiring with them, we now grant cultural and political concessions to others." She cites the rise of official bilingualism and the popularity of the Mexican consular ID card as examples of the erosion of American citizenship based on common language and undivided loyalty.
